The Paintings of Summer

This summer has been busy! While not finding as much time to paint as I would like (owing in part to the 3 summer jobs I took and in part to taking care of my adorable 9 month old), I did make it out to a few paint-outs and did a few small studio pieces. Here are some highlights:

The Monument and Leroy in the Corner 18"x24" Oil on Canvas SOLD

This was painted by the central library as part of the downtown Indianapolis paint out sponsored by the Indianapolis Library Association. I painted the war memorial from the lovely park to the north. To my left was an entire loaf of bread, scattered to feed the geese the day before but abandoned when finished. To my right was the talented Indiana painter Ronald Mack making another masterpiece. In front of me was a homeless man, sleeping and reading in the shade of that temperate morning (bottom left corner of the painting). After I had finished, I invited him to the artist reception inside the library. He was very opinionated about what constitutes great art and showed a good deal of articulation and discrimination regarding the art world and art techniques, much to my delight. This painting won 4th prize and was purchased right from the easel.

Flowing Well Park, Carmel IN 9"x12" Oil on Canvas $200

I had to be at my summer job in Carmel, IN at 10, which left me about one hour to do some art if I could. There is a nice little park that has a dripping well water fountain and a little hiking trail on my way to work and I raced over there. By the time I was set up, I only had about 45 minutes left, which turned out to be just enough time to do this study. I tried to artistically incorporate busy 116th street into the background.

Summer Bouquet 8"x10" Oil on Canvasboard $150

Carribean Sunset 8"x10" Oil on Canvas $150

Post-baby, I often only have time for a quick 8"x10" during a stolen hour of time. This one is one of my favorites from this genre. I was going to put some sailboats in there, but I thought it worked better as just a study of light and cloud forms.

Lunch Hour Beach Trip 8"x10" Oil on Canvas $150

I usually only paint a scene if I am standing there or have experienced it in the past, but the day I painted this I was having a rough day at work and needed some release at lunch hour. This was done from a few photos in about an hour. It was a great escape.

Lincoln Park Gazebo, Zionsville 8"x10" Oil on Canvas $150

This was painted as part of the Zionsville paint out. When I got home I kicked myself for not entering this into the contest (which I did not win). I entered instead the painting below, which I had spent more time on. Later I realized that the Gazebo painting was a much stronger picture.
